Pea Gravel Calculator
Pea gravel is small, rounded stone about three-eighths of an inch across, prized for walkways, patios, and dog runs because it stays comfortable underfoot and drains freely. Since the pebbles are loose and rounded, a two-inch layer suits most paths, with a little more where you want firmer footing.
Bags are always rounded up. Order about 5–10% extra for settling and waste — this is a planning estimate only, not a guaranteed quantity. Density is typical; confirm the exact figure with your supplier.

| Default depth | 2 in |
| Source | Reviewed default — US landscape-supply references (MulchPros; Dirt Connections) put loose pea gravel at ~1.25–1.5 t/yd³; held to the safe over-order end. Confirm with your supplier. |
Worked example
A 10 ft × 10 ft area at 2 in deep is 16.7 cubic feet — about 0.62 cubic yards, roughly 0.86 tons at 1.4 t/yd³, or 34 half-cubic-foot bags. Add 5–10% for settling.
Use notes
- Spread two to three inches over a compacted base, and edge the area so loose stone does not migrate.
- Rounded stone shifts underfoot, so it is a poor choice for driveways that carry heavy vehicles.
- Order a little extra — pea gravel settles and spreads as it is raked out.
Frequently asked questions
How deep should pea gravel be?
Two inches suits paths and patios. Go to three inches for play areas or where you want firmer footing over soft ground.
How much does a cubic yard of pea gravel weigh?
Roughly 1.25 to 1.5 tons per cubic yard depending on moisture and stone size. This tool uses a typical figure you can override with your supplier’s number.
Does pea gravel work for driveways?
It can, but rounded stone tends to shift under tires. A compacted, angular base such as crusher run under a pea gravel top holds up better.
